Dr. Nurnberger is the Joyce and Iver Small Professor of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he serves as Assistant Chairman for Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Director of the Institute of Psychiatric Research. He is also Professor in the Program in Medical Neurobiology and in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics. Dr. Nurnberger has a longtime research interest in genetics of psychiatric disorders, especially bipolar disorder. He is the author, together with Dr. Wade Berrettini, of the book Psychiatric Genetics and he edits the international journal of the same title. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Psychiatric Genetics. For the past ten years he has coordinated the multi site NIMH Genetics Initiative Collaborative Study on Bipolar Disorder, which has developed a national resource of diagnostic information and cell lines from families with multiple cases of bipolar illness.
