Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry website! Our mission is to be a destination site for training the next generation of leaders in psychiatry, furthering neuroscience discovery, and pioneering new approaches to the translation of these discoveries to the treatment of neurobehavioral disorders. Several developments make this an exciting time in the history of our Department – with new and expanded opportunities for our educational, research, and clinical missions.
The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and IU Health have committed significant resources to basic and clinical neuroscience. We have recently completed our move into the brand new IU Health Neuroscience Center, where we collaborate with colleagues in Neurology, Neurosurgery, the Neuroimaging Center, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and others to treat individuals with neuropsychiatric disorders. Additional clinical, research, and education partners include IU Health Methodist Hospital, Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, IU Health University Hospital, Midtown Community Mental Health Center/Wishard Health Services-Eskanazi Health, Larue Carter Hospital, and the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center, among others. Together they provide a rich array of clinical services, research, and training opportunities that is unsurpassed.
In April 2014, our strong cadre of departmental neuroscience researchers (the Institute for Psychiatric Research) moved to a spectacular new Neuroscience Research facility connected to the Neuroscience Center. Joining with investigators from the Stark Neuroscience Center, this group comprises an impressive collaborative coalition of neuroscience researchers organized around scientific themes, with the goal of making dramatic gains in our understanding and treatment of devastating neuropsychiatric disorders. In partnership with investigators from the Regenstrief Institute, a world-class informatics and health services research organization, we are poised to translate novel research findings into interventions that have a direct impact on patient care and population health.
Our Department offers accredited training programs for general psychiatry residents and triple board residents (Pediatrics, General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry). We have formal fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Geriatric Psychiatry. Fellowships in Psychosomatic Medicine and Neuropsychiatry are planned. Formal training in integrated and collaborative care has been established. We also have one of the longest established Psychology Internship Programs in the country. Based upon the large and diverse clinical population we serve, and the various clinical settings in which we practice, we believe that the training experience for our students, residents, fellows and interns is unsurpassed. I urge you to read the summary of our educational programs on the website and to contact us if you would like more information on applying to one of the programs.
In summary, the Department of Psychiatry at the IUSM is vibrant, growing and looking to the future. We would like to thank you for visiting our website and encourage you to contact us directly if we can be helpful or answer additional questions.
